About

Based in London, UK, artist Tennessee Jones-Phillips (b. 1999, Toronto, Canada) intuitively employs scanography, sound, illustration, and assemblage to animate their self-taught practice. Tennessee's practice currently takes many forms as her art evolves naturally from a place of curiosity and affinity for knowledge and play. Tennessee's method heavily depends on her environment, using what's available. Informed by culturally significant folklore, catholic 'gnostic truths,' and her spiritual beliefs, she aspires to build an anthology: a realm to manifest her dreams and experiment, a Fastness with an ever-evolving ecosystem.

Seeking to heal personal and ancestral traumas, Tennessee creates works that redefine their knowledge of liminal worlds and her roles within them. Jones-Phillips creates abstractions of their likeness, reimagining their body as a primordial being sprite from the realm their human form inhabits. She adopts a mystical body through her simulacrums, ultimately denying the viewer her Black body, becoming a gatekeeper and protector.

This website is an archive of their artistic practice from 2019 - current.
